In honor of Deep Purple's Jon Lord, who passed away a month ago at the age of 71, an all-star roster of musicians have signed up to pay tribute to the heavy metal pioneers' most famous record. Both Deep Purple's obvious spiritual descendants in the metal world and bands who branched further from their brand of blues-informed hard rock have jumped on the Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head LP, which seeks to recreate Deep Purple's 1972 classic in its entirety.
The obvious question is who gets the honor of performing "Smoke On the Water." The not-so-obvious answer is both Carlos Santana and the Flaming Lips, who will each get to do their own cover of the hit. Can't wait to hear that iconic riff livened up by noodly leads and burbling psychedelics, respectively. [NME]
