Apparently Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla, and the rest of Death Cab for Cutie were sitting around recently, trying to figure out how they could write a song worse than "I Will Possess Your Heart," and they must've realized that the only way to do that was to take inspiration from a sure-to-be crap movie based on a crap novel.
That's right: Despite reports about contributions from Thom Yorke and Bon Iver to the soundtrack for Twilight sequel New Moon, the first single from the soundtrack will be "Meet Me on the Equinox" by Death Cab for Cutie, which will premiere during the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 13. The band released a statement explaining their enthusiasm for the song:
“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest. We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.”
Maybe someone's fishing for a "Best Song" nomination for next year? Let's just hope that no one from K Records or Kill Rock Stars gets the same "Northwest" idea.

You, sir, are an idiot. I'd love to see you try to write a song even one quarter as good as "I Will Possess Your Heart." Since when does writing a song for a movie based on a lame book automatically make the song crap? And in what universe does writing a song for a movie like New Moon get you considered for a nomination for best song (I'm assuming your talking about a real award like an Academy award, and not some lame MTV award)?
