For his second solo effort, Hourglass, the follow-up to 2003’s Paper Monsters, Depeche Mode’s frontman is probing his rather troubled past and, at age forty-five (although he looks amazing, especially considering what he has done to himself), Gahan is taking on some of those nagging “getting older” issues. Gahan’s hangover is palpable in this moody sepia-toned vision of the morning after. Director Barney Clay’s slow-moving direction perfectly captures both the mood of this wistful song (what else would you expect from Gahan?) and the speed traveled by those who had way too much fun the night before. The fleeing woman and the judging looks Gahan receives from the other hotel guests (and from a pug, no less) will surely have you wondering: what happened in that hotel room?
