At this point in his career, Daniel Johnston is just as well known for the artworks he produces as he is for the tender music he has released into the world. His work has been shown in galleries and museums across the globe, and the illustration that decorated his Hi, How Are You? album sleeve gained great notoriety when Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt bearing its image.
Now, Johnston has completed his first graphic novel, titled Space Ducks: An Infinite Comic Book of Musical Greatness. An iOS app will complement the print edition of the comic book, taking users further into the Space Ducks world with games, voices and animation included. The app will also contain an album of Johnston’s music—his first new material in three years.
This venture will launch at a special Brooklyn Vegan sponsored party at SXSW on March 13, featuring a set by Johnston plus live performances by Built to Spill, Kimya Dawson, R. Stevie Moore, Jeffrey Lewis and many others (head over here for more details).
