Track Review: D'Angelo - "Really Love"

This reminds me of a Ne-Yo track except that it sounds like it took more than 30 minutes to make, probably won't end up as a strip club anthem, and doesn't limit itself to the 12-17 female demographic.
However, I do have a lurking paranoia that all the coke, crack, and whatever else D was smoking for the past seven years has messed up his voicebox. Unfortunately, this song does not put that fear to rest. It sounds good, but this is some low key crooning even by D'Angelo's standards. All things considered, this is a fresh breath of air for a stale R&B/Soul genre (not counting the hybrid electro-soul genre).

I'll take that over 90% of what is being categorized as R&B. Put the album out already D'. It's been 7 years...

April 18, 2007 at 8:55 a.m.

I love love love the music on this. The melodies are great, too, but D be mumblin'. Let's hope it's just a demo.

April 18, 2007 at 9:17 a.m.

Who would be classified as Electro-soul? Some music genres don't make any sense.

April 18, 2007 at 11:19 a.m.

Sa-Ra, J*Davey, Vikter Duplaix, Spacek, Amp Fiddler, T'raach, Owusu and Hannibal, etc...I mean sure, alot of r&b artists use synthy stuff in their work, but it all still fits in a nice clean little package. Not so much with the above mentioned.

April 19, 2007 at 12:18 p.m.

This is a perfect song, nice beat and D half singing, half mumbling.

April 19, 2007 at 9:21 p.m.

Yes it is a demo

April 20, 2007 at 12:57 a.m.

Lmao I'd hate to say this, but all the coke or crack you're scared he has been smoking hasn't affected his voicebox, from his RH Factor appearances and Snoop Dogg cameo, D is well capable of carrying a tune, this is a demo or something, but whatever it is it's a sign

April 21, 2007 at 6:43 p.m.

I'm so happy to hear that my idols back. I dont care, but this is a nice song to me. What do you all expect, the guy has been MIA for some 4-5 years now. Of course he going to get rusty! I'm sure he just put that song out just so he can let ya'll know that he still working. He's not dumb, of course he's not going to put his best work out now! That's stupid ! So jut be patient I know "D" has alt of great music to come!

April 24, 2007 at 1:14 p.m.

This song is great. Melody, mumbling, singing, whatever. It is music. D doesn't seem to be into speaking to all you kids out there on the web. D is almost old school now. Ya'll won't get this. Ya'll gon' lean and snap and pop... We're blessed with D'Angelo. Especially with this statement non statement. You critics need a penis of your own.

April 25, 2007 at 1:12 p.m.

Ya'll some dumb asses This is the joint D has his own flavor that makes him so UNIQUE this is like a blues, jazz r&b joint smoke one and relax.Bump all the negative talk because the ones talking will be the 1st trying to get it when it comes out. HOLLA

April 27, 2007 at 2:20 p.m.

I liked it my d@mn self, even if he was high or not, half of the cats out here today cant even make half the shit he could so all that negative talk about D can fall the hell back, everybody around here believe all the damn rumors(big ass lies) when he was the main person neosoul music was based on...the human brain has been drenched, soaked, brainwashed in **** load music and when you finally hear something thats original you cant take it because slappin that ass, makin money, and doing drugs and whatever else the hell you`ve been listening to since he hasnt been out has sat in your heads and I dont even know what it will take to get it out, I can see you dont know real music and for the ones who left positive feed back, thankyou for having a REAL ear for music we all know "D" is the best artist, oh yeah and **** that (neo) shit his ass cant touch "D"

April 27, 2007 at 4:03 p.m.

lmao..so..who wrote that review?? Are you retarded? Don't ever compare D'angelo to Ne-yo.. .."like a Ne-Yo Song"??? you're kidding right? Ne-yo is a cookie crumb pop dancin ass usher with no ORIGINAL or CREATIVE talent...ne-yo doesn't even make his own music..like you said..for the kids..and "mumblin"??.....I don't want to say it's his "signature sound" or anything, but he's been singing like that in and out of his falsetto since day one...D is the epitomy of a soulman...you just don't get it..IT's a lost cause if you don't get it...How can people even criticize this man musically...or his personal life? He is music...a ******* legend..a myth...seroiusly in a league of his own right now...he does his OWN thing...he doesn't just put out anything....put any ne-yo, usher or whatever album up to and D'Angelo albums and it's like apple pie from the store next to grandma's apple pie from scratch, which one you going to want to eat? They're not even in the same category to be compared. I'm right there with the other posters..this song is like a breath of fresh air...we can't ask these artists for nothing..that's what being an artist is right? not caring about nothing else. Keep doing your thing D..that's all the true fans and other REAL artists want

April 27, 2007 at 4:53 p.m.

Hey Literal Johnson, there is this thing called sarcasm that people use in their writing which, like satire and irony, is not meant to be taken at face value. And just because he's one of the best artists of the last 20 years doesn't mean he's immune to putting out bad material. Thanks

April 27, 2007 at 6:24 p.m.

i'm still trying to figure out who said this song wasn't good in the first place. a few small complaints, but nobody said it wasn't good. i think people just like saying "**** the haterz!"

April 27, 2007 at 11:33 p.m.

I like ne yo, and he does write his own material. I like d'angelo more.

April 28, 2007 at 6:44 p.m.

All of his material is good. When you listen to a D'Angelo album you listen from start to finsh...I think he IS immune. "Really Love" so fly, so effortless..I'm with Dcutty that neyo shouldn't be in the same sentence yo, even though he's talented.**** a blog anyway. D'Angelo the soul king of our time, and on and on....can't wait for the album

April 28, 2007 at 7 p.m.

Anyone can stumble. Doesn't matter if you're Michael Jordan or D'Angelo. In any case, the writer does state "All things considered, this is a fresh breath of air for a stale R&B/Soul genre (not counting the hybrid electro-soul genre)." Selective reading is a dangerous thing.

April 28, 2007 at 10:17 p.m.

Finally!!!! Now I just hope he gets Soultronic back together and tours! I never got to see him live and have been living vicariously through the Live in Stockholm album for the last 5 years.

May 8, 2007 at 1:57 p.m.

Hey covert......I understand that all in all it was a positive review..and yes I get that you're being sarcastic with the neyo statement. It just sounds like a whole bunch of whining like, (nerd voice) "..it's good, but golly, I can't understand what he's saying" and "However, I do have a lurking paranoia that all the coke, crack, and whatever else D was smoking for the past seven years has messed up his voicebox" sounds like a negative jab and bullshit statement to me. Seems a little more dangerous to write that in a song review than selective reading don't you think dave?? That aside, I'm just saying...people should be jumping out of their seats a little more to hear any kind of creative effort from D'angelo even if it's exaggerated, unless you want to listen to ******** songs meant for the 12-17 demographic like you said. Just think it should be a little more "hell yeah" instead of (nerd voice) " uhh...it's okay..wonder if he smoked to much crack though"..thanks

May 8, 2007 at 4:03 p.m.

while i still disagree to a certain extent, i can respect that.

May 13, 2007 at 7:05 p.m.

For everyone out there. This song was not to be released yet and it was released unauthorized. It is no where near finished and what you're hearing is demo. Rest assured, however, that when the album is completed, it will blow you away, fan or no. This is someone telling U who is close to the source

like all the rest said with some since, D~Angelo is the man, you need to stop listening to so much BULL SH!T because now you dont know what real music is, I LOVE DANGELO!, and how how in the world can you compare NEHO or NEYO to D~Angelo, thats like comparing homemade soulfood to mcdonalds, there is no comparison, neo is just a watered down version of usher, not even usher can touch dangelo NO ONE CAN, why do you think his fans are so freakin loyal to wait this long, because NO ONE is like him, what is your problem, that wasnt sarcasm you idiot, that was a shot at D (the man), and if you judging him you judging all the rest of the people that got his back, you must be one crazy ass freak to even saying anything parshaly bad about dangelo, everyone makes mistakes, what man you know can come out of all he`s been through and still sound good...NONE you never have and never will, so stop frontin this SHIT WAS HOT, and this wasnt even finished yet...oh yeah and LU SAYS are you ?uest ?

this joint sounds straight but his voice sounds crazy and he sound like he mumbling alot in ti but he still doin it

June 6, 2007 at 10:42 a.m.

People don't really understand nowadays because like someone said earlier, we've been flooded with BullS$#@ for so long, we don't know how to react to good music. Unless you caught on to real music when such artist as Badu, D'angelo, Rapheal Sadiqq, Angie Stone, Musiq (the 1rst album), Bilal and various others were leading the way, you pretty much missed the whole essence of neo-soul and revitaliztion of REAL music. Unfortunately, now I doubt you will ever appreciate its value. "Really love".......... is like.....Micheal Jordan returning to the league after 2 1/2 yrs retired and dropping 50 points in the playoffs, wearing the number 45, (IF you can remember). We all knew that this was not only just a glimpse of the once great Jordan, but also a forecasting of the Jordan that would dominate again and win 3 more championships. True this song could have been on Voodoo, but be easy.....he's wearing number 45 right now.

June 17, 2007 at 10:37 p.m.

This is one of the smoothest songs that D'angelo has come out with. Everything from the vocals to the instruments flows together really beautifully and that's the really why I love D'angelo. I've been waiting for him to come back and now that he has, I know that he will really SEND IT ON!!! (That's another smooth song I love.)

June 19, 2007 at 10 p.m.

I know for an absolute fact that this is a demo and is not intended to be a full song, at least not yet. He mumbles so people won't try to take over the lyrics. I first heard it in 2001 when I was in love with a very close relative of D's and it has become the melody that brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it because it will always be the melody I associate with my one true love. He knows who he is.

June 20, 2007 at 3:34 p.m.

Tiya...Lu is not ?uestHe is my one true love...

June 27, 2007 at 9:18 a.m.

Whatever to the rumours, sometimes a m*********r needs a rest. You know how hard is is makin music, the presuure, the ********. Im tired a hearin this and that about a m*********r. Leave a man alone an let him be. Publics like dog sometimes, never lettin **** lie. Do this, do that....let him be, let him find his way, Joe P know's nothin but to hound a m*********R till he near dead. Everybody needs to find their way. Yo D, wherever you are, carry your force field like a shield, for real, Just like PR says brother. One love. Things are never as they seem.

June 29, 2007 at 9:43 a.m.

June 29, 2007 at 2:10 p.m.

Brilliant!!! (Writing anything else seems... extra.)

June 30, 2007 at 11:14 a.m.

The thing about D'Angelo that makes him great is his ability to absorb many different music styles. From Jazz to Latin, Metal to Classical......he is a fan of it all....which takes his music in groundbreaking and fresh directions. D'Angelo will be one of those artists that stands the tests of time and will be still listened to 30 years from now. I hope he keeps flying straight.....it would be an absolute shame to lose yet another artist with such a high music IQ.Much love....from Boston.

July 5, 2007 at 3:33 p.m.

Basically In a Nutshell, D'angelo is once again

July 7, 2007 at 2:49 p.m.

I think that this is a perfect breath of fresh air. D is the only artist I know who makes totally original music and can make a cover sound like his own creation (crusin', feel like making love, etc.) D stays true to what he love and is.M indU nderstandingS oul'sI nternalC reativityD is the greatest. Next comes R. Kelly, who is the only one keeping soul music alive while D was away.

July 7, 2007 at 2:51 p.m.

Really love is warm, smooth and seems to have a happy tone to it. I so happy to see D working on the new album "James River".

July 7, 2007 at 3:02 p.m.

Mike Hayle Dangelo always mumbles, thats his MO. I listen to everything he does but everytime he comes out with a new song I still have to read the lyric sheet to really get the words. Ain't nothing wrong with it. His mumbling sounds better than 90% (I'm trying to be modest) of the "r&b" that's out there. His voice always goes in & out (similar to Aaron Neville but not exact). He's always done that. Listen to the song he wrote & tracked out on the Jason Lyric's soundtrack(for ya'll that didn't know) He opens up his voice on that track & it sounds fantastic. So He hasn't lost anything. There is one song that kept me pacified while waiting on the new album: SHAWN KANE's "Like Whitney Loves Bobby".Crafty One u said it the best.

July 7, 2007 at 3:16 p.m.

U will know was the song on the jason lyric soundtrack. he comes in at the end of the song.

July 7, 2007 at 3:17 p.m.

U will know is the track name from the jason lyric soundtrack.

July 7, 2007 at 3:39 p.m.

When you gone hit us with a gospel quartet joint D?

July 15, 2007 at 2:14 a.m.

PFFFFFFT THIS IS TO FRESH! i hope D brings out his new album if this is a demo dam imagine his new **** WOOHOOO hahah neyo's ite.... but if people are comparing that rnb commercial shit to neo soul they have to get there heads in line and learn wats real and wats not cause this is real

July 25, 2007 at 11:46 p.m.

OMG!! I am only 16 and I know enough to know that this is what you call real music. All the people that are hating on D really need to chill. I have loved D'Angelo ever since I was 5 years old and heard "Brown Sugar" (my favorite song of ALL time) for the first time. It's just something about his mumbling and the beats to his songs that just match up perfectly and this song is no exception. I luv it. Whether he was high while making this song or not, I honestly don't care. If he can make a song while being completely f*cked up and it still sounds better than most of the crap that's out nowadays, it just let's you know that D is a real artist. I really can't wait until his next album drops because Lord know that my "Brown Sugar" and "VooDoo" are worn out from being played so much.

August 11, 2007 at 9:37 p.m.

November 14, 2007 at 12:07 a.m.

i love ne-yo he writes all of his own material and some for others, d'angelo's voice is great always had been, this song review is trash, but like this corny review my statement is only an opinion, who gives a sh!t about what either of us has to say? let people listen and if they like it they'll buy his album, if not too d@mn bad, but none of that has to do with what he's done in the past or in the privacy of his home. leave him alone, you want to bash him don't buy his album, other then that get a life

December 9, 2007 at 7:06 p.m.

I've been a fan for a long time and the music sounds good wether or not what he's looking like, but he can stand to drop at least 20 dubs!

December 26, 2007 at 6:13 p.m.

this is my new favorite followed

February 25, 2008 at 4:02 p.m.

I really like this. Can't wait for his return. I've been thinking about this cat for a while now. Hopefully he'll come back with more bangers.

February 29, 2008 at 2:18 p.m.

March 7, 2008 at 9:09 p.m.

wONDERFUL INSTRUMENTATION

March 18, 2008 at 2:51 p.m.

I absolutely love D'angelo all his music is good. I'm feeling really Love and I can't wait for James River to come out I will be the first person in line to pick it up. And for whoever has something bad to say you can just stop hating on MY MAN because he has the greatest talent of anyone who has came in the 90's or 2000's!!!

May 13, 2008 at 2:53 p.m.

He doesnt wanna drown out the melody this sounds like a interlude or prelude he doesnt need brown sugar lyrics cause the musical aspect is powerful and absolutly captivating... i enjoy this

November 2, 2008 at 2:15 p.m.
