Wolf Parader/Handsome Furrier disses Sufjan

Here's Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs describing seeing Sufjan Stevens in concert: "There were, like, 20 people on stage and they were playing in a church and everybody's sitting down and it just sounds like a wall of shit."
Wow. Sour grapes on the talent tip, no? It's sad when sub-par artists have to resort to cheap insults. Here's me wishing Sufjeezy wasn't such a little nice boy Christian. That whole turning the other cheek thing is overrated.
And I'm not even gonna get started on how foolish those two look.

I like Sufjan and Wolf Parade/Handsome Furs, but if we're taking sides I'm more intof Wolf Parade.

My problem with him saying this isn't even about dissing Sufjan. It's about not realizing there are very different genres of music. Different strokes for different folks, right? This is like if the Ramones ragged on Leonard Cohen for being too soft. Realize your sounds are in two different worlds and keep your mouth shut.

Dan Boeckner is not a "sub-par" artist.

'This is like if the Ramones ragged on Leonard Cohen for being too soft.' or like you ragging on dan boeckner because he doesnt dig sufjan.

Not sub-par? So is he just par? He certainly doesn't seem great. I've never been impressed with Wolf Parade, so I don't have much interest in Handsome Furs either.

We've learned a lot from rap about the artist diss. Generally the person administering the diss will be an Artist that is less popular or well known, and his target will always be an artist of more well-known stature. The generally intent is not to espouse his opinion about an artist but to garner media attention for him/herself.The need to insult an artist, particular one of a completely different genre shows a lack of tact, and the personality of a total prick.

I think he's a pretty great artist as reflected on the site.I like Sufjan but I can see how someone would consider him zzzzz.

I absolutely side with Handsome Dan Boeckner on this one. Sufjan in concert is like watching really polite musical theater.

But why would you even cover this? You're only causing more problems by insulting Dan. Not to mention thinking Sufjan should be protected from criticism or any kind of opinion. When people start ignoring beefs, they will go away. Why does one have to take sides?

hey john zeiss concentrate on reporting and avoid your lame personal take on things we are all better off without it, Dan Boeckner is right on the money with his opinion and you should just shut the hell up and if someone looks ridiculous and uncool is quite surely you a talentless webpage writer unless I'm wrong in which case point us out to your music or projects, come on prove us wrong you prick.

May 25, 2007 at 7:44 p.m.

I'm okay with covering this, but we should not have insulted Dan in this post. I've told the writer of the post this.

May 25, 2007 at 8:27 p.m.

I'm totally with Dan Boeckner on this one, but can we insult victor instead? The best part about this blog is its wit and its masterful ability to toe the line of condescension. Some of this blogs most memorable posts for me were those Brandon Flowers ones.

"And I'''m not even gonna get started on how foolish those two look."You at least have to give him that. I think people are being a little hard on the original poster. If Boeckner opens the door to criticism of other musicians, people have a right to retort.

"The need to insult an artist, particular one of a completely different genre shows a lack of tact, and the personality of a total prick.''"I agree with this....its lame when some artist starts insulting anothers work, it shows the maturity of a child and it is hard not to assume the artist is jealous, but then again to insult the work of the insulter is just as bad...and very hypocritical....the only one who comes out of this in the right is sufjan, for saying nothing....dan boeckner and john zeiss do not come off looking very good at all...

May 27, 2007 at 12:33 p.m.

they both suck.

May 27, 2007 at 2:20 p.m.

He was offering an opinion, like a gazillion people do each day. He just did it with a rather harsh comment. Kinda fucking funny if you ask me. "Wall of Shit" haha... Sufjan should reply with something along the lines of "Oh yeah, oh yeah.. well, you guys sound like a constant Parade of Wolf diarrhea streaming out of the Handsome Furry sphincter you call a mouth!" Then again, that doesn't make sense.

May 27, 2007 at 3:01 p.m.

Yeah... I agree with Wolf guy on this on but I also agree with his drummer... but perhaps not so "affectionately"Wolf Parade's drummer Arlen Thompson:"Well yeah - we kind of sometimes affectionately call our sound 'the wall of shit'," he laughs. "Sometimes you can just get so much going on all at once"http://www.dbmagazine.com.au/376/iv-WolfParade.shtml

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, especially since it was an opinion of a single show he saw, and not one of Sufjan's body of work or personal character. My opinion, since I'm entitled to one, is that Wolf parade is a pretty hugely overrated band (a la Clap Your Hands...) who have 2 or 3 decent songs, and far too much hype surrounding them; we'll see soon how their follow-up turns out, or if anyone cares anymore. Sufjan, however, in my opinion, is 2 legit.

July 16, 2007 at 2:49 p.m.

He gave his opinion, he's entitled to it, whether you agree or not, though I would be interested in knowing the connotation. Something tells me that he probably wasn't being especially mean-spirited, and Sufjan fanboys are reading too much to it. Regardless, I happen to agree that Sufjan's arrangements are cluttered and could definitely see how it would sound like 'shit' live. Also, both Wolf Parade and the Handsome Furs are great, and the Handsome Furs don't look anymore 'ridiculous' than Sufjan's cheerleading squad. It's called kitsch, kid.
