A clip of Cansei de Ser Sexy's "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" created by an Italian blogger has racked up nearly ninety million views and claimed the title of most watched YouTube video ever. The song, which gained some attention in the ad that introduced the iPod Touch, unseated the previous champion, “The Evolution of Dance,” in mere months. While this explosion could be written off as yet another example of the Apple phenomenon that has also helped launch both Feist and Yael Naim, Andy Baio of waxy.org is having none of it. He did some research and found some slight irregularities in the video’s viewing history:
"[The] CSS video has a very unusual 21,487-to-1 ratio. In other words, for every 21,487 views, someone leaves one rating. To compare, the average ratio for every other video in the top 10 is a more reasonable 590-to-1."
Even though this video does have the ultimate search word in the title, it’s not hard to make the connection that it is likely bots are behind the video’s sudden popularity, but the video’s creator had this to say:
It all started with the Qoob music channel's video contest. I didn't participate in the contest, I just downloaded the footage in order to edit them and I added a different track. I cut out some scenes where they were singing, added some effects to the background, and then I uploaded it to YouTube.
Never would I have imagined that such an ugly video, made on a whim, would make it to the top of the charts. Believe me, even taking the iPod commercial effect into account, nothing can explain the absurd number of views. I get constant messages accusing me of being a hacker, when i barely know how to turn a computer on and off. Some people call me a genius, because I beat the system, Everyone is free to imagine me as they choose, however they prefer. Like the kid from Rome who keeps writing me because he's convinced it's all some kind of conspiracy!
The discrepancy between the number of comments and the views has to do with the fact that I'm deleting hundreds of insults I receive every day. But for the rest of this absurd occurrence, I have no explanation. I have as much of a clue as you do!
Neither CSS or ‘inspirational comedian’ Judson Laipply, star of “Evolution of Dance,” have yet offered a comment on the controversy. [Waxy.org via: Idolator]
