As the Daily Swarm reports, bad things happen when you criticize “the Zep.”
Criticizing Led Zeppelin almost got me into a huge fight in my old high school cafeteria. Some guy at the table kept saying he thought Zep were the “kings of heavy metal.” “What does that mean?” I asked. “Do they sit around their houses wearing crowns?” He didn’t find my attempt at Woody Allen humor funny. In fact, he got downright angry and called my music “Mousketeer Music.” For what it’s worth, he was talking about Elvis Costello.
But I digress. Jack Bruce, the bassist of the ’60s band Cream started a firestorm of controversy when he made these comments a few weeks back:
“Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one fucking gig…one fucking lame gig…while Cream did weeks of gigs. Fuck off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is.”
He later tried to backpedal, saying the remarks were a joke, but the death threats were already coming in. Maybe he can cover “In My Time of Dying” as a joke.
