Courtney love reconvening Hole; new single due next summer

Many know Courtney Love for her recent drug-addled exploits and Yoko-like puppetry of Kurt Cobain's posthumous estate, but it's easy to forget that she was once a decent musician. Love recently announced plans to reconvene Hole, her former chart-topping girl-grunge day job. Don't call it a reunion, though. Classic Hole bassist, backing vocalist and sometime Smashing Pumpkin Melissa Auf Der Maur will only be making a brief cameo, and guitarist Eric Erlandson isn't even onboard. According to Erlandson, he and Love have an agreement that no official Hole reunion can happen without their mutual involvement. Erlandson's been replaced by Micko Larkin of defunct U.K. indie rock quartet Larrikin Love. Whoever the new band may be, they're set to record a new single in Jan. 2010 for a summer release. Love's long-gestating sophomore solo album, Nobody's Daughter, which was written in collaboration with Linda Perry and Billy Corgan, is reportedly set to be released as the new Hole album.

Hole is still remembered for their 1994 effort, Live Through This. While many at the time suspected Love's husband Cobain of having penned the tunes, that didn't stop two million people from buying it. Live Through This was followed by the platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated Celebrity Skin, which was followed by Love's rapid descent into drug abuse and financial mismanagement. The Hole reunion couldn't come at a better time for Love; she's currently being sued by American Express for over $300,000, and she's recently been in litigation regarding who can access daughter Frances Bean Cobain's multi-million dollar trust fund. Hey Jackholes, Hole was around before she even knew Kurt.

It wouldn't really be Hole without Samantha, Melissa, and Eric. Damn. Yes, Kristen is gone, but that can't be helped. I wish Courtney would get her act together, make amends, and get the real Hole back together. But like Smashing Pumpkins, perhaps the best is left for the past .. . The 90s and earlyy 2000s were fun while they lasted.
