Controversy over Justice photo claims band just mime to all their songs live

Yesterday a photo surfaced (seen here) of Justice performing that had Gaspard playing a controller that was clearly unplugged. Some minor controversy has arisen over that (how dare a band that doesn’t play instruments fake like they’re playing controllers!), but URB has a response from Gaspard, where he says it was clearly a mistake, and the photographer just took the picture at an inopportune time:

"Yeah, shit happens! I remember the story, I couldn't remember the city but i think it was in Manchester. I didn't noticed at first, because as you can see I was looking at the computer to launch the next vocal hook and right after I realised that the blue screen went black, so there was no way possible it could work. So I plugged it back in, big deal!  And the next thing you know is this picture."

If Gaspard is telling the truth, it seems like a big deal was made out of nothing, but even if the band is faking, would it be a big deal? It’s not like you’re paying to see them shred out a guitar solo or really rock out. You’re essentially paying for the right to hear their records really loud in a packed club. And that wouldn’t be impacted if they were faking. [URB]

I've never known security to freak out on shooting a band from backstage like they did during one Justice set... but that might be coincidence.

Funnily enough, that happened immediately after my friend said that "half that stuff isn't plugged in, anyway", but I thought she was just kidding.

As a musician who plays a real instrument, it's great to see something like this. Haha! That doesn't happen to me because I don't base my career on tricking people into thinking I'm awesome.

I Love how assured he is...
I like justice so I dont really care.

However, last week i had the pleasure
of seeing a live indietronica
band from Brooklyn who actually played their instruments with craftsmanship!

I think justice still has a little way to go.

I am in a band(Pilots) that does happen to use that exact controller that he is using. As you can see in the photo, the USB plug is unplugged, but the chord to that is laying right underneath the input. Also, with this machine, you do not need a power supply. It uses phantom power from laptop or PC. Most USB controllers are like that as well. He also mentions how the blue screen went black. That would indeed happen if the machine got unplugged. the screen is a nice blue color as he mentioned.
I just wanted to clear some of this up. I have no idea for sure either way if they play live or not. But it seems ive read people comment them actually know how the gear works. They most likely use Ableton Live(like Daft Punk)and that contoller he has is popping off the samples hes selecting.
