Common's Lyrics Don't Sit Well With Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou, the world famous poet and author of works such as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, is upset with Chicago rapper Common. If you listened to Com's latest, The Dreamer/The Believer (out tomorrow, Dec. 20) when you had the chance, you'd have noticed that Angelou is featured on a track entitled "The Dreamer." On it, Common uses the n-word several times, a word that Angelou herself considers "vulgar and dangerous" to the black community, according to the New York Post. The poet said she had never heard Common use the word and that she was "surprised and disappointed" that he put her on a track where its use is prevalent. In response, the rapper said Angelou "knows I do use the word. She knows that's part of me." You can listen to the song below and see if having Angelou and the n-word on the same piece negates the message of "The Dreamer." [Spin]
