So Common had a "pre-listening party" listening party over the weekend where he played eight songs deemed to be standouts. His announcement that the album would feature more contributions from Kanye, Dilla, Bilal, and D'Angelo sound great, even if it could just be a clone of 2005's Be. Having Lily Allen and will.i.am are on the album is a little risky, but if that goes right, it could go very right.
What sets this album on a potential course for disaster is that Kanye attempted to honor Dilla by chopping his beats in the same fashion as the late producer. Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but it has never been a successful aesthetic to adopt. Be afraid, Common fans. Be very afraid.
