British meaningfulcore juggernaut, Coldplay, is already recording album number five. The band spent all of 2009 touring behind last year's Viva la Vidaor Death and All His Friends, which has sold a staggering (by today's standards) 8 million copies sold worldwide, and they're itching to try something new. Sources close to the band say that Chris Martin and company are hard at work in a “dilapidated north London church” with Viva la Vida producer Brian Eno in tow. The new material is a reaction to Martin's feeling that his band is being pigeonholed as a bombastic stadium act. The new songs reportedly have a more stripped down vibe than recent Coldplay outings, and band is recording live with as few overdubs as possible. They're also plotting a short tour of smaller venues to try the new stuff out on the fans in a more intimate setting. Exactly how the new album will mine classic U2 for inspiration remains to be seen. [The Sun via Stereogum]
