Mylo Xyloto isn’t just a weird album title. It’s the name of a hero, a young warrior in the battle against sound and color in a futuristic fantasy world. Or so says Mark Osbourne, the Academy Award-nominated writer who has teamed up with Coldplay to adapt their latest record into graphic novel format.
This won’t be the first time that graphic literature has been inspired by music, but it may be the first time in recent memory that a band of such worldwide stature enters the comic book arena. The six-part series will follow its eponymous character through the world of Silencia as he discovers that the forces he’s fighting–color and sound–might actually be the forces for good. Sounds a little like soft cyberpunk for music fans; hopefully Osbourne’s writing chops will animate the idea into an interesting companion to the album.
Coldplay has released the following statement about the books:
“Three years ago we had an idea with our friend Mark Osborne about a character called Mylo Xyloto – “xylo” as in xylophone, “to” as in toe. Gradually Mylo’s story and universe came together and this ended up providing the backdrop for the album and tour. Now we’re proud to announce that early next year the story is going to come out as a six-part comic. We hope you like it. It was fun making it.”
The first installment of the Mylo Xyloto series will be released in February of 2013 through Matt Groening’s Bongo Comics Group.
