The official Coachella website includes a long list of items that festival goers can and can’t bring to the festival. Hats are fine. Sun block is definitely recommended. And a fanny pack is perfectly acceptable. Knives, weapons, and stuffed animals have got a big red NO next to them. Perhaps there was a near-fatal incident with stuffed animals in a previous year?
Not included on the list, but more important than all those things apart from sun block, is this useful guide to who’s playing and when.
Friday’s lineup pits Fatboy Slim, Jack Johnson, and the Black Lips against one another as they headline three of the five stages. Aphex Twin and the Verve make intriguing returns to the live arena, and watching Kim Deal and her Breeders in the mid-afternoon sun should be a highlight.
Saturday’s main stage is where the action is, with the tantalizing triple-header of Kraftwerk, Portishead, and Prince. There’s also a Brooklyn standoff as Animal Collective and M.I.A. take to the Mojave and Sahara stages at approximately the same time.
Sean Penn’s addition to the lineup on Sunday is the most perplexing part of the schedule. Perhaps he’s being recruited as a roadie to set up Roger Waters’ laser light show? Other Sunday highlights include Daniel Ash’s reunited goth rockers Love and Rockets and a chance to bliss out to Spiritualized in the late afternoon.
