Coachella lineup announced

Paul McCartney, The Killers and The Cure will headline this year’s Coachella Festival, which takes place between April 17-19. Speculation about the acts playing and the announcement of the final lineup have reached fever pitch this week, but everyone can now breathe a sigh of relief and figure out whether its worth spending $269 on a three-day pass.

Other notable appearances include Morrissey, Franz Ferdinand and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Among the surprise inclusions are Leonard Cohen, Amy Winehouse and industrial pioneers Throbbing Gristle. Presumably My Bloody Valentine are headlining one of the stages on the Sunday and not going on before the Cure, because Robert Smith’s audience may not have their hearing intact after Kevin Shields has finished with them.

The full lineup is on the official poster below.

I think I'm going to go to New York instead.

after last years underwhelming lineup (still went) this is awesome we knew being 'chellas 10th year that it would be amazing and it will be that and more.....

I wouldn't be surprised if Amy Winehouse canceled. There's definitely going to be visa issues with her.

good lineup

I was thinking of going this year... but those headliners aren't really up my alley.

That Sunday lineup interests me a lot more than the other two days.

Nice line up. I would love to go...

Man, there isn't a single band on the line-up that I haven't seen already, or if I haven't seen that I would pay to see. No thanks.

The headliners seem pretty lame. The Killers and the Cure? Is eye-liner required of Coachella headliners?

January 30, 2009 at 12:18 p.m.

the killers? eh. my bloody valentine is awesome though.

January 30, 2009 at 12:19 p.m.

Leonard Cohen, Paul Weller, MBV, Superchunk...

The line-up has a nice smattering of compelling performers, but also a lot of buzz bands that could tank bad. I lived out west last year, and went and had a blast, but now that I'm living in the east, I probably won't make the trek.

I'm assuming, too, that there will be some bombshell announcement coming in a month or so -- like they did with Prince -- telling us who the real headliner on Saturday is. Because it can't be the Killers, right?

..wait.. is that Shep Fairey I see on Sunday? What the hell is he gonna be doing?

January 30, 2009 at 12:38 p.m.

Some good bands for sure. Unfortunately very few I would want to see at a festival.

January 30, 2009 at 12:40 p.m.

i'm thinking this is a pretty snazzy lineup, especially compared with last year. I would love to go but sadly $269 (let alone a plane ticket) is a bit out of my budget..

Leonard Cohen is completely intriguing, but I hope they give him a tent slot to make the most of his music. I don't know how well it would work outdoors at this place. But as for the rest of the line-up (except for Morrissey...I'd go see him anywhere) I agree with Gabi--been there, seen that.

Looks like the contents of an aging hipster's iPod in 2003!

The Cure is amazing live...and they play everything. It seems the kids want to be those aging hipsters these days -and for the past 2000 days. It's an amazing lineup...at least Saturday and Sunday are. Although I despise festivals, this may be good enough to concede.

no too impressed with the Killers as a headliner. bleh

Am I the only person who thinks headliners at these things don't really matter that much? It's all about the middle: the headliners all draw huge crowds and if you want to be anywhere near the stage you've gotta stand in one place for several hours a lot of the time. So if there's one or two good headliners and a bunch of good middle bands, then I'm cool.
By the way, this middle's looking kinda lackluster.

January 30, 2009 at 3:22 p.m.

no you are right, it's all about the middle bands it's loaded specially friday and sunday plus there will be more added but even as it is it's pretty great, arcade fire and radiohead saturday and we are set.

The overall group is Eeehhh at best! I much rather stick to SXSW.

That is sort of strange that a lot of the middle bands were hitting their stride nearly a year ago at the latest. Glad to see Mastodon in there as the lone representative of the non-danceables. And how are The Killers not good headliners? They may not be legends but they are HUUUUUGE. Easily the largest-selling band on the bill in terms of sales of most recent albums, wouldn't you think?

Is this Coachella human? Or is it dancer?

You're stupid if you don't know!

February 3, 2009 at 3:45 p.m.

Throbbing Gristle? I'd go just to see them, but I hate the desert. M. Ward, Blitzen Trapper, the Hold Steady, Junior Boys, Beirut, Leonard Cohen, Antony and the Johnsons, Shepard Fairey - the lineup looks pretty solid to me.

February 28, 2009 at 12:52 p.m.

Hell yeah, The Killers are great.

March 19, 2009 at 6:53 p.m.

I went to the MBV show at the SF Design Concourse and was horribly disappointed - the acoustics were so awful that I couldn't even tell which songs they were playing. Not often do I think that bands will sound better in the open air, but this is one of those times - would love to catch the Coachella set!
