CMJ 2010: Must-Hit Dance Parties

    Every October, the holidays come early for music-lovers in and around NYC: Yes, it’s CMJ time again! As always, the festival — held Oct. 19-23 at venues throughout the city — is offering plenty of options (catch the full schedule here). But this year we decided to focus on the dance-oriented performances. (All events 21-plus unless otherwise noted.)

    Tuesday, Oct. 19
    What: Technique Electrique: A Gigmaven CMJ Showcase
    Who: Drop The Lime, Nite Club, Year of the Tiger, Syvia, Atypicals
    Why: An evening of diverse electronic styles is capped off by heavy bass It Boy Drop the Lime.
    Where: Canal Room, 285 West Broadway at Canal Street

    Wednesday, Oct. 20
    Who: Holy Ghost! with The Knocks
    Why: Two highly danceable live shows by New Yorkers: Holy Ghost! are sure to get much love from the hometown crowd with their tighter-by-the-week set, while rising DJ/producers The Knocks will work their feel-good magic.
    Where: Bowery Ballroom, 6 Delancey Street

    NOUVEAU YORK presents The Bond Music Group CMJ Showcase
    Who: Dr. Dunks (of Rub-n-Tug), Eli Escobar, Jacques Renault, Justin Miller, Liv Spencer (House of House), Mike Simonetti, Nomi (of Jessica 6), Punches, Rub-n-Tug, Runaway, Still Going, Stretch Armstrong, VHS OR Beta DJs
    Why: A night with NYC’s hottest disco movers and shakers ensures sweaty, sexy dance-floor insanity.

    What: France Rocks NYC: Social Club Party
    Who: Mikix The Cat, Yuksek & Brodinski (The Krays), Pilooski (of Discodeine), The Aikiu, Mustang
    Why: A disco-lover’s dream, some of France’s finest electronic talent will take over NYC for a night. Génial!

    What: dF & The Hype Machine present I <3 NY CMJ Showcase

    What: Palms Out Pachita!

    Who: Savage Skulls + Douster, Fagget Fairys, Marcus Price & Carli, Dubbel Dutch, LOL Boys, The Touch, Brenmar, Tim Dolla, ESTAW, Michael Magnan & Nita 

    Why: Come party with Palms Out Sounds, Prefix (yes, we’re proudly co-sponsoring!), and hot DJs from around the globe at this megarager held in Pacha’s swanky VIP sister club.

    Where: Pachita (618 W. 46th St., 3rd Floor)

    What: Girls & Boys/Windish Agency CMJ Showcase
    Who: Designer Drugs, Jamaica, Grum, Matthew Dear, Dominique Young Unique
    Why: Despite the venue’s infamous clusterfucks and overzealous security, the line-up is pretty damn impressive, ranging from more established artists like Matthew Dear to up-and-comers like Grum and Jamaica. Be sure to get there plenty early to guarantee the cheap price of entry.
    Where: Webster Hall, 125 E. 11th St. between 3rd and 4th Ave.

    Saturday, October 23
    What: FIXED presents Making Time
    Who: Matthew Dear, Holy Ghost!, Crocodiles, Javelin, Gold Panda, Jamaica, Kisses, Dave P/JDH & more
    Why: Fixed residents and DJ/promoters extraordinaire Dave P and JDH bring Philly’s legendary indie dance party to Brooklyn for one night only, assembling not only one of the week’s raddest line-ups but one of its longest ragers (9 hours!) too.
    Where: Public Assembly, 70 N. 6th St., Brooklyn
    When: 9 a.m.- 6 a.m.
