On Friday, there were reports from producer Polow Da Don that Rihanna and Chris Brown recorded a duet recently, after reconciling after Brown's alleged assault of Rihanna. I shuddered in horror at the thought of domestic abuse being used to sell singles, but it seems like the song might not really exist--it seems that the "duet" was actually recorded last year, and was actually just Brown and Rihanna making vocal demos on a track that was eventually recorded by other artists.
Hopefully that's true, and Polow Da Don was just looking for a way to get his name in the news. Meanwhile, Brown is due in court on April 6 to be arraigned for the alleged assault. [NME]
Hey, if Ike and Tina Turner could write one of the most famous songs of all time...
Yeah, but Ike and Tina didn't have a huge publicity storm following Ike (allegedly) punching and biting Tina, followed up by Ike and Tina recording a new song that represents their love following said biting and punching like what supposedly happened here.
Its gone too far. There is no reason they should be getting this much attention.
You raise a good point Andrew. So the lesson here is: write the duet with your significant other before getting into a domestic abuse case with her, rather than after?
The world has gone to hell. Or perhaps I just am.
That's not really what I meant. Ike was obviously a dick, but no one really knew that much about the domestic abuse, at least not on a larger scale, until well after Ike and Tina got divorced and stopped making music. The Chris Brown and Rihanna song would exist BECAUSE of the domestic abuse, not in spite of it.
Yeah, that's the main difference. What bothers me is how the whole Ike/Tina dynamic, which unraveled over decades, is now coming in the same full fury over weeks, ostensibly when the two musicians are in the peaks of their careers. My real point is that this story will cripple and overshadow the careers of Rihanna as well as Chris Brown (Rihanna's always been the better artist, IMO, anyway) while tjhey're still developing. At least with Ike & Tina, their legacy had already been established before it could be revisited.
Yeah, the way the media beast is this kind of thing blows way the hell up really quickly. But I guess it is probably the most high-profile spousal abuse case to come out in a long time, probably since Ike and Tina. And I think the bigger shocker is that they're both so young (Brown is like 19 and Rihanna is 21). That's what makes this such a huge story.
