Jorge Medina Estevez is an interesting figure. Medina is an influential priest in his native Chile, and was a staunch supporter of former dictator Augustus Pinochet. Pinochet had a fondness for murder, censorship, kidnapping and the quashing of basic human rights, and seems like an odd figure for a man of the cloth to align himself with. The controversial priest has now commented on Madonna as her current tour arrives in Santiago, where she is set to play two huge shows. "This woman comes here," he said, "and in an incredibly shameless manner she provokes a crazy enthusiasm, an enthusiasm of lust, lustful thoughts, impure thoughts."
The enthusiasm for Madonna's shows has reached fever pitch in the Chilean capital, where devoted fans have camped out for days to gain tickets for the shows. Amusingly, there is a section on Medina's Wikipedia page that is prefigured by this warning: "the neutrality of this section is disputed." The section in question contains just one sentence, which says: "In December of 2008, Medina showed the same moral courage and fortitude that made him a supporter of Pinochet's slaughter of innocents by bravely speaking out against a visit to Chile by pop musician Madonna."
