Cartoon Network has been taking a bit of flack from some corners of the internet lately. Commenters on animation industry blog Cartoon Brew – kind of like early Gawker in that it gets as many industry insiders as mouth-breathing cartoon-watchers like you and me – have been wondering who CN thinks their audience is these days, and if they’re maybe over thinking what is and what isn’t “too ‘cerebral’“ for them. “You want nothing but random humor to fill your network,” reads in part one much-liked comment on a post announcing the recent cancellation of the beautiful and actually kind of moving Sym-Bionic Titan.
I mention all this on the occasion of this single and album from Brooklyn band Cheeseburger, which Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim (admittedly a better-managed brand) has chosen to make only the second non-compilation, non-entirely-show-related release on their Williams Street Records imprint (the first was in 2007). Another Big Night Down the Drain (out May 3) is Cheeseburger’s second release, and the single, “Winner,” is three minutes of big and dumb guitar strutting loosely in the Fang Island/Andrew WK vein. Sample lyric: “I hit a home run right over your fucking head/ If you don’t like it, you can go home.” Funny and fun for 14 year-olds, and not much more.
Of course, Cheeseburger is going to be the soundtrack to season 2 of the amazing, endlessly creatively disturbingtorturecarnivalSuperjail. I’m sure it will fit perfectly. I want to trust Cartoon Network. But by itself, this track is pretty meh. Watch your brand, guys. You don’t want to end up like Nickelodeon.
I always hear how Chesseburger is better live. Anyone?
the guitarist is a creator of superjail, and the music isn't geared towards the Nickelodeon crowd at all. I'd say that you misinterpreted this band in a way that most people who watch any Adult Swim programming (superjail mostly) would not. Maybe members of the public who have never been exposed to either the show or the network might have the same opinion as you, but who cares if they like the music...
the target audience is adult swim fans and people who like classic rock revival bands.

I for one really enjoy the song. Be it a revival or not, I love the classical feel to it. Superjail may be a very disturbing show, but the animation in Superjail is very talented. The complexity of what happens all at the same time takes a lot of imagination and skill, even if it is mindless violence. Point being, even if I heard the song totally not Superjail or Adult Swim related, I would have loved it. It may be simple, but its still a fun and catchy song.
