After another devastating loss (via TKO in the second round) to UFC middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva, Chael Sonnen, the UFC’s former middleweight top contender is making the move up to light heavyweight. Sonnen announced the move during FUEL’s “UFC Tonight.” He also confirmed his opponent, former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffen.
On the show Sonnen stated:
“… many years ago I fought with a gentleman and I lost. I became a fan of him, I saw him win a championship, I saw him etch his name in stone as a Hall of Famer, he is the one guy Jon Jones hasn’t beat. And, on December 29th, Forrest Griffin and I will figure this out. Now, my friend beat me, but we are going to do this again. Tickets are not on sale yet, but it will happen. That fight will be at light heavyweight. There is something to be said about earning your spot in the sport and on December 29th, I am going to do that.”
Could this reset in the fighter’s career possibly lead to a title shot against the light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones? If Sonnen can avenge his loss to Griffen at IFC’s Global Domination” via triangle choke almost ten years ago in Denver, then I say let the smack talk begin!
UFC 155 will be headlined by Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos’ defending his heavyweight championship against former champion Cain Velasquez. The is expected to take place on December 29, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nevada. [MMA Mania]
