Okiniwa-born chanteuse Caroline enticed a lot of ears last year with the ironically clear lullabies of her debut, Murmurs. On that record, her voice's lovely lilt was left mainly unadorned. With only a minimal beat or a sly ambient wash for support, the focus was mainly on her pipes and the deep hypnotic state they could easily trigger. The approach won the Los Angeles transport plenty of glowing notices in the U.S. music press, but the track's bare bones were too much of a temptation for like-minded artists and producers to withstand. While we wait patiently for Caroline to mesmerize us with a batch of new songs, her Temporary Residence label will ease the pain with Murmurs Mixes, an iTunes exclusive remix album to be released January 8.
Prefix is pleased to premiere the song "Sunrise" in its glowing "Sunset Mix." The reworking comes courtesy of Brightest Feathers, a side project of Philly ambient rockers Saxon Shore. Feathers thicken the atmosphere and swallow the beat of the original track. In the middle of the warm and dreamy hum, Caroline's voice sounds like a fond memory -- impossibly pristine but blurry in detail. The shuffling beat that eventually develops adds a bit of nervous intrigue, but thankfully it doesn't sabotage the sense of pretty quietude. Whether drifting off or blinking back, its transitions are smooth and soothing.

I love Caroline's music! Her voice is really interesting and pure, quiet but clear. The simplicity of her original songs allow so much room for remixed-embellishments. What I've sampled so far of the remix album is very promising. |

She's definitely not unadorned here, but it's certainly nice. Very soothing. Can't wait to hear the whole album.
