Remember back in 2007 when Rolling Stone published a map that showed the "Indie Rock Universe" that seemed innocuous but was clearly a barely veiled Camel ad? Well, Camel probably does, because they just lost a lawsuit over the ad, this one brought by nine states' attorney generals for violating the 1997 Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement that stated you can't sell cigarettes through cartoons.
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company owns Camel, and they have been ordered by a Philadelphia judge to either take out an anti-smoking ad in Rolling Stone, or pay $300,000, which is toilet paper money for the company. But still, win one for people against stupid ad promotions.
Perhaps the biggest news from the trial is that it will definitely help Fucked Up and Xiu Xiu, who brought their own lawsuit (on the part of the other other 184 artists in the ad) against the company and Rolling Stone for using their names without permission. The trial basically proved two things: one, that the "Indie Rock Universe" was an advertisement (which Rolling Stone is still saying isn't the case), and two, that it was unlawful. The band lawsuit is still being decided. [Pitchfork]
