Borders wants to help your grandma download music

Borders’ will be opening the fourteen concept stores this year with an eye toward branching out into digital media. The concept, instead of giving people a place to read magazines for free, is to scale back the physical content of the store in favor of  “lifestyle” genres including cooking, travel, and health. The stores will also have digital kiosks that will allow customers to research family genealogy and download books and music. Borders is hyping the fact this service will allow users not comfortable with technology to join the digital revolution. A less-touted aspect of the program is that none of the downloaded material is going to be compatible with iTunes. That’s a bit of a head-scratcher, given that Amazon, Borders’ digital partner, has compatible downloads. At least there’s almost no chance my grandma’s Andy Williams collection will find its way onto my iPod. [Coolfer]
