The hash tag #BonoToryScum is all over Twitter at the present time, with many U.K. users of the site building up considerable anger toward the U2 singer. The reason for their bile is due to an appearance he made at a conference held by the right wing Conservative Party, who look set to usurp Gordon Brown’s Labour Party at the next election.
Bono appeared by video link at the conference, where he delivered a pre-recorded speech that encouraged the party to maintain their commitment to international development. Bono stopped short of endorsing the Conservatives, although his appearance is likely to stoke up some debate about where his allegiances lie, especially as he showed up on stage at the Labour Party conference in 2004.
Stuart Braithwaite from Mogwai seems particularly incensed by Bono’s appearance at the conference, tweeting: “I am genuinely shocked that my opinion of Bono could actually sink any lower.” Presumably the U2 singer will make a statement about this perplexing move, but at the present time this feels like another kick in the teeth for Gordon Brown in what are assumed to be the last days of his turn as Prime Minister.
