Bono isn’t happy with the low sales of recent album No Line on the Horizon, and decided to vent his frustration in an interview for the Associated Press. The U2 singer lashed out at what he calls the “diet of pop stars” that he believes the public thrives on, which is a little rich coming from someone who once tried to make a blatant move in that direction with the Pop album.
“We weren't really in that mindset,” Bono said. "We felt that the 'album' is almost an extinct species, and we [tried to] create a mood and feeling, and a beginning, middle and an end. And I suppose we've made a work that is a bit challenging for people who have grown up on a diet of pop stars."
Bono’s patronizing remarks won’t win him any new fans, and his point about the slow decline in popularity of the album format is nothing that hasn’t been chewed over in countless articles about the state of the industry. With his recent tour angering environmentalists, and an appearance at the right-wing Conservative Party conference, Bono’s finger is firmly off the pulse.
