B.o.B On Track To Hit No. 1; Hip-Hop Blogs Considering Whether Or Not He "Sold Out"
B.o.B's long-delayed, forever-in-the-works, released-this-week album, The Adventures of Bobby Ray, is expected to make a big splash on the Billboard 200 next week, predicted to sell somewhere around 80,000 to 85,000 copies. Good for B.o.B; dude has been on the grind for like four years with very little to show for it until now.
But at the same time, rap blogs -- once B.o.B's only supporters -- are starting to question whether or not the Atlanta rapper "sold out" to hit the top of the Billboard. He at least went more pop-oriented, given that he didn't have weak, sappy singles like "Airplanes" and "Nothing Like You" on his mixtapes, but Cocaine Blunts is accusing him of making "the most selling outest sell out rap album to ever sell out." The dude over there makes a good point about how the "selling out" talk has more or less disappeared from hip-hop, as commercial smashes are what's expected now, so rappers are expected to go poppy (see Wale). But he claims B.o.B made an album full of "Disney Radio shit," which very well might be true. How do you guys feel?

Haven't heard the record but I'm okay with a few songs intended to move units to the masses.
Since B.o.B vs. Bobby Ray you could see that dude was not averse to pop music (re. satellite), so I'm not really surprised at all by the style on the debut.. I would have liked a little more of the down south influence and a little less of the paramore influence, but I'm not mad at him for trying to sell records...
They can kick rocks. The album is good. Poppy but well done. Coming down on dude for creating something melodic and accessible is pretty simple minded. What would he gain from having harder beats and less fans? The online hip hop cognoscenti can be so insular sometimes. Stars are meant to shine. Let the man live. Dude's debut single is number one. There should be less hatin and more congratulatin.
Thriller was a pop album. Thriller.

the thing that irratates me is if he played rock and was white it wouldnt be an issue for whtie americans or black americans..such a double standard for black americans when the consequence for failure is so dire..there arent that many black artists that can get a mainstream job on mainstreet if it doesnt work out..believe me I know..but we see Andrews mindset in how he argues on chris brown and selling out and other topics nto once ahs he touched rock selling out in recent years...what a hypocrite.
