Bob Marley would be thilled to see such a moment of tolerance and unity in his honor such as the one that occured in Banatski Sokolac, Serbia Saturday night. The small Serbian village unveiled a statue of Bob Marley midnight Saturday, and brought together musicians from Serbia and Croatia to perform for peace and love in honor of Jamaica's favorite son. It is the first known statue of the reggae icon in Europe.
The statue is part of a somewhat strange recent trend of pop culture statues in the Balkans. Serbia also has a statue of Rocky, and Bosnia even has a statue of Bruce Lee. In terms of bizarre statues in Europe, however, nothing quite tops Brussels in my mind.
