To celebrate Woody Guthrie’s 100th birthday–which is on July 14–Wilco and Billy Bragg are planning to release a huge boxset of their tribute to Guthrie–the Mermaid Avenue albums (released in 1998 and 2000)–which will include something special. Namely, Mermaid Avenue III, the as-of-yet unreleased third album by Bragg and Wilco composed of “recovered” Guthrie lyrics. Apparently the group and Bragg recorded three full albums, but cut down the songs to make two albums.
So, later this year, Nonesuch will be releasing a four-disc box set of the Mermaid Avenue albums, which will include the three albums, and the 1999 documentary about the albums, Man in the Sand.
No release date has been set in stone yet, but expect it to be out this summer. [BPM]
