An radio poll from the listeners of BBC 2 determined "Billie Jean," the Thriller-era Michael Jackson classic, to be the greatest dance song of all time. It's somewhat of a weird selection, because besides its "instantly recognisable and its distinctive groove," it's actually somewhat of a difficult song to dance too. It's quite reserved and toned down—certainly silky smooth, but try moving your hips to it.
The other songs in the top 5, including James Brown's 'Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine' and Alison Limerick's "Where Love Lives," are certainly more danceable. But this is the same pool of readers who voted a Beatles song the worst song of all time (granted, it was "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da"). No matter how great a song "Billie Jean" is, it's not one that inspires the most dancing.

I don't necessarily disagree with the findings of this particular poll but I can never take a British poll seriously since one named The Smiths the best band of the 20th century.
