Vinyl still kicking out the jams
Despite all the hubbub about CD turntables and iPod mixers taking over the world, DJ's are still keeping the wax alive. The United Record Pressing company, for instance, cranks out from 20,000 to 40,000 slabs of vinyl each day.
Not surprisingly, the article quotes numbers at about 60% of the plant's output comes from hip-hop and R&B jams, going out to selectors in the club. Vinyl of course makes up a small fraction of the music market, with a bit under a million LPs sold versus over 500 million CD's, though the numbers may not represent the 12 inches getting pushed out at your local mom and pop record store. The Invisibl Skratch Piklz may be gone and turntablism mostly a distant memory (except for the occasional entertaining Kid Koala release) but nice to hear stories about keeping the wax alive.
