Outkast rapper Big Boi is prepping the release of his upcoming album BOOMIVERSE for June 16th. To add to the hype, he joined Zane Lowe on Lowe’s Beats 1 radio program today to talk about the album and share an infectious new single, “Chocolate,” featuring Trozé.
Built around a driving house beat, “Chocolate” is a dance anthem for the club. It features a pulsing kick drum, dirty synth bass, and a deeply-sung hook: “I just cashed a check, and I’m about to blow it all on chocolate.” Big Boi told Lowe that he decided to add the dance-inflected single after he tested it out during a nine-month DJ residency. While Big Boi has proved himself as an in-depth lyricist, he keeps it simple and fun on “Chocolate” with bars like, “I feel my sweet tooth actin’ up / All I need is you to go head back it up / Hundred paper sack brown yeah I’m black enough / Never holla ‘man down’ cause we’re standin’ up.” The groovy house elements are sure to light up summer nights on the dance floor. It also proves as a testament to the constantly-blurring lines between rap and electronic music.
Big Boi also mentioned to Lowe that he’s ready to share more new music as soon as his fans “show appreciation.” You can listen to the full interview here.

The Atlanta emcee has shared three other singles from BOOMIVERSE: “Kill Jill,” “Mic Jack,” and “In the South.” Each track has had several electric features, from Adam Levine to Gucci Mane. “Kill Jill” was given a visual companion, featuring Killer Mike, Jeezy, and Big Boi dressed in royal medieval wear.
BOOMIVERSE will drop this Friday via Epic Records. It is twelve tracks long and features other hip-hop stars such as Snoop Dogg, Curren$y, and Pimp C. You can pre-order it here.
