Round 1 in the Beth Ditto/Kate Perry war of words most definitely went to the Gossip singer. Perry’s “I don’t want to say anything bad about her” response was met with derision, so Ditto has slammed the “I Kissed a Girl” singer in another interview, this time with Spinner.
It’s not about Katy Perry,” says Ditto. “It’s about this song and its innocence on her part. To [her], it’s just this party song. But as a gay person, it’s like, ‘Oh, of course this straight person singing about kissing a girl goes straight to Top 40 and people buy this record.’ Who can give a fuck about real gay people? It’s like, ‘Oh, that’s what you think?’”
Ditto’s righteous anger at Perry only seems to gather pace as she hits the press treadmill for the Gossip’s Music For Men album. She concludes her tirade by addressing Perry directly: “You never thought about what a real gay person feels, and the impact that a song like that has on the gay world in a time of crucial civil rights.” Perry really needs to come up with a more thoughtful comeback to this latest outburst from Ditto.
