Best Buy, the United States’ largest electronics retailer, will announce tomorrow plans to begin selling instruments, and musical accessories, in as many as 85 of their stores. Together with the chain’s decision to offer vinyl records and albums by unsigned bands in their stores, this move is aimed at trying to lessen the blow of sinking CD and DVD sales.
Each of the 85 stores will devote a large amount of floor space to instrument sales, and this expansion will make Best Buy the second largest instrument retailer in the U.S.
Best Buy’s instrument selection won’t just be instruments on the cheap end (like those offered at stores like Wal-Mart and Target), however. The chain will be offering high-end instruments, with drum kits costing as much as $5,000 and guitars as much as $3,200.
Ten Best Buy’s have instrument sections already, including five in California, two in Illinois and two in Minnesota. In early August, a selection of Best Buy’s instrument offerings will be made available on the company’s website. [Yahoo! News]
