Before Gnarls Barkley, after Devo
Caught between Netflix this week, I went fishing in the DVD collection and pulled out 1999's Mystery Men. Kinka Usher's directorial debut may feature the most random collection of musicians put together in the same film. In addition to regular thespian Tom Waits, clearly visible in the film are Pras as a disco gangster, Mark Mothersbaugh acquitting himself nicely as a band leader, and a pre-Gnarls Barkley Cee-Lo with his old group as a member of "The No-Goodie Mob." Throw in Paul Reubens and Kel Mitchell and that "All-Star" song by Smashmouth and the party's complete.
