Devotion, the sophomore album from haze-addicted Baltimore slowpokes Beach House, has all the same basic ingredients of the band’s celebrated 2006 debut. The drum machine still sputters; the organ still drones. But it seems that the band has spent the year turning the dial a few clicks to sharpen the soft focus. Singer Victoria Legrand doesn't sound ready to run laps on the "Gila" per se, but she definitely sounds a bit more alert here than in her previous naptime delivery. The song structure is the most improved element, though, with snaking guitar chimes, well-defined backing vocals, and a blinking synth beacon providing a way through the fog. A small hop forward maybe, but one that's likely to increase the duo's profile significantly.

I'll say something nice: I love this song and I love this band. Very beautiful. Makes me not miss Mazzy Star so much. |

Dude, I give ridiculous compliments in my daily track reviews all the time, I think this is a step up from the last album, which is what I said here. I am a twat though, so you got me there. |

nice backhanded compliment you twat. does it kill you people to say something nice?
