BBC documentary tries to explain Jay-Z to British folks (Video)

Remember that flame-up that happened over Jay-Z headlining Glastonbury, and how British people lost their minds over some guy they apparently don’t know (or like) having that spot? Well, the BBC produced a documentary tying to explain Jay-Z to British people (he’s a rapper, he’s huge in the U.S., he’s good, he’s from the hood, etc.). I can’t imagine anyone who has had a passing interest in hip-hop in, say, the last 10 years, wouldn’t know all of this, but apparently this stuff is of some worth on the BBC. The whole documentary is pretty long, to watch the whole thing, go here. [Real Talk NY]

When Jay-Z was in town to re-open the Hollywood Palladium and I was all excited, I asked my mum and sister (British folks) if they knew who he was and they did.

My sister then told me that my mum showed her my pictures of "Kane" West on Prefix, so perhaps us British folks really don't pay that much attention to American rappers... it's probably more that British *mums* don't care that much until their daughters start shooting for US music blogs, though.
