Recall Records will release the soundtrack to cult classic film ''"Downtown 81,''" an East Village hipster fairy tale that starred painter/musician/junkie Jean-Michel Basquiat, and stands as a sort of documentary for that period'''s burgeoning art and music scene. The movie, which was screened at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, but was shot in 1980 and 1981, included a who's who of NYC cool for its cast, such as Deborah Harry (as a bag lady), John Lurie, Melle Mel and Lydia Lunch. And its soundtrack reflects that time when new wave, hip hop, graffiti and post-punk were emerging simultaneously. ''"I feel like a lot of the people in this film should have conquered the world. The film and soundtrack is a great place to learn about the beginning of a scene,''" says the film'''s writer, Glenn O'''Brien. The album will be released on November 6.

This movie is pretty unwatchable, but it's fun to pretend that surly hookers used to dance to "Contort Yourself," and surreal to see how bombed out NYC was back then...
