The xx were recently in New York for a number of shows at the CMJ Music Marathon, although gaining entry to such events has proved increasingly difficult. The band has become extremely popular in a short space of time, and it appears guitarist Baria Qureshi may have been adversely affected by their sudden rise.
The band played in London last night (Oct. 28), and were without Qureshi in the lineup. "Obviously this has been a really tough few days for us,” said bassist and singer Oliver Sim from the stage. “This is the first time we've played as a three piece. It's devastating not having Baria here with us but you all being here has made us feel better...thank you very much."
European dates have subsequently been canceled, although Qureshi’s absence may not be permanent. A statement has been issued in an attempt to clarify the matter: "Baria didn't perform last night after feeling exhausted from The xx's recent touring commitments. As a result, the band performed as a 3 piece in London last night and have postponed some European shows which they are hoping to reschedule. They are next due to play in Frankfurt on 3rd November."
