Avey Tare From Animal Collective Releasing Solo Album, 'Down There'

Panda Bear’s Tomboy may be one of the most anticipated albums of the year, but his fellow singer in Animal Collective, Dave Portner (aka Avey Tare), is also prepping a new solo record. His previous venture into non-Animal Collective material, the Pullhair Rubeye album with his wife, Kria Brekkan, received mixed reactions in 2007, especially when listeners discovered the whole album had been mixed backwards.

It’s difficult to tell at this stage whether the forthcoming Down There will differ stylistically from Tare's other solo ventures, although it’s likely to be more of a challenging listen than Noah Lennox’s new effort. The Tare record will be released on Oct. 26 through Paw Tracks, and will contain nine songs that were recorded by errant Animal Collective member Josh Dibb (aka Deakin).

“His first official solo full length carries you through a murky world of sound, an alien death world of soul grooves that is both honest and otherworldly,” reads the press release. “Wait for sundown and turn it up loud. Take a ride on this haunted boat and let yourself be guided through deep sloshy rhythms, waterlogged bass, and moonlit breaks in the canopy that reveal a crisp crystalline pop buzz.” Uh, thanks guys.
