Hey, here's a juxtaposition you don't see every day: Sleater Kinney, Lil Wayne, Coldplay, and astrology. Carrie Brownstein, erstwhile guitarist for Sleater-Kinney, has been running a fine blog for NPR for just over a year. After a wildly unpredictable year of music in 2008, it was only natural that Brownstein would look for someone with finely tuned predictive powers to see what will come next. So Brownstein turned to...a psychic???
Needless to say, this is the type of thing that can only happen in Portland. Andy Gehrz, a Portland State University grad student on Ancient Greece, moonlights (hur hur) as an astrologist and psychic. She also is obviously something of a music fan, and it's hard to tell whether her predictions for 2009 are due to her own judgment or the battle between Saturn and Uranus.
Among Gehrz's predictions: a mid-life crisis album for Jeff Tweedy, and indefinite hiatus for Vampire Weekend, a DUI charge for Lil Wayne, a synth-pop change of direction for Arcade Fire, and Coldplay's breakup. She may be right about the Arcade Fire news, considering that the band has been collaborating with LCD Soundsystem's cohorts. As for Coldplay, the breakup rumors aren't exactly new. Astrological prowess, or good music blog scouring?
Another prediction is a buyout of Rolling Stone by Pitchfork. This seems counterintuitive; I had always thought that Pitchfork would eventually transmogrify into Rolling Stone without any artificial push from the economy.
