Apparently, the Arctic Monkeys have been touting The Coral to the press as one of their major influences, having already invited the latter to open some shows for them last year. In turn, Coral singer James Skelly has commented on how pleased The Coral are to be inspiring newer artists, saying that kind of influence is "what you do it for."
That's all fine and dandy, of course, but there's just one niggling little question we couldn't help asking ourselves upon absorbing this information. Pray tell, exactly what musical qualities do the Arctic Monkeys and Coral have in common? Far be it from us to naysay the Monkeys about their declaration of inspiration, it's just that the sonic connection is utterly inaudible to us. One must admit that it's a pretty big leap from the mellow, trippy, psychedelic sounds of The Coral to the urgent, spastic, herky-jerky, post-post-punk flavors of the Arctic Monkeys' approach. Can someone throw up a flowchart for this one or something?

The Coral's first album is pretty herky-jerky, particularly the singles Goodbye and Dreaming of You. That guitar riff intro to Goodbye could easily be an Arctic Monkeys' song. At any rate, I'll get working on that flowchart
