The Arctic Monkeys have added their frosty, simian voices to the gaggle of critics that accuse Live Earth's star-studded performance roster of hypocrisy. Asked by the French press why the 'Monkeys declined to play Live Earth, drummer Matt Helders said: "We're using enough power for ten houses just for lighting. It'd be a bit hypocritical." His bandmate Nick O'''Malley added "We're always jetting off on aeroplanes." A fine point lads, but considering the seriousness of the global warming issue, don't you think inaction and apathy are greater crimes than hypocrisy?
Arctic Monkeys: "Playing Live Earth Is Hypocritical" (Gigwise)

"A fine point lads, but considering the seriousness of the global warming issue, don'''t you think inaction and apathy are greater crimes than hypocrisy?"No it's not. People are lying to themselves and each other to suspend the feeling of guilt for not doing anything about it for decades. This problem is not new, the only new thing is that it's suddenly trendy to care. Half of these bands are only playing as advertisement for themselves, Live Earth isn't going to solve anything. 'Creating awareness' with people that didn't care enough to have done something before it got out of hand by spending enough energy to power a small country. Yugh. Over here in The Netherlands the Amsterdam Live Earth event is being broadcasted live on enormous screens at all major train stations. Putting up several screens bigger than anything that would fit into my house to remember me I should turn off the stand-by switch on my TV? That's quite ridiculous in my opinion.I'm helping the environment on 07/07/07 by not turning on my computer and TV for the whole day and stearing clear of this Live Earth nonsense.
