It seems that everyone, from Merge Records to the fans to the band itself, has failed to realize just how heavily anticipated the Arcade Fire's new tour has been. Apparently when you reach number 2 on the Billboard Chart in 2007 (well before Vampire Weekend and The National reached similar plateaus), and have picked up new fans via Obama endorsement and Super Bowl ads, you'll develop an audience who will fanatically flock to your website at 10 a.m. for a presale announced just yesterday.
Nonetheless, confusion over the pre-sale has swept the internet as the clock struck 10 a.m. EST. arcadefire.com faced repeated server issues and lags, occasionally producing a 503 error. It even merited some #fail hashtags on Twitter (oh noes!).
Additionally, confusion reigned over the band's planned show on August 4th at Madison Square Garden. Yesterday BrooklynVegan reported that the presale for the New York date would actually begin June 9, a week after the other pre-sale tickets went on sale. This would conflict with the announcement made on Merge's blog yesterday. Based on the current state of the website, BrooklynVegan's report is accurate.
More on this as it develops...
