Apple responds to market competition with added value deals

· by

Perhaps in response to the new challenge leveled by Amazon’s download store, Apple has started exploring some new ways to make iTunes competitive. The following was in an Apple press release announcing a deal with European distributor PIAS to deliver over forty thousand DRM-free tracks to iTunes:

"This new global agreement with iTunes Plus will also see PIAS Digital offering a range of new ‘added value’ digital services as part of the deal, including bundling incentives with Ticketmaster and the ability to buy ring tone versions of the repertoire sold via iTunes."

Although it appears that Apple isn’t budging on its “one size fits all” pricing scheme, it could compete with Amazon’s lower prices by offering unique items such as ring tones, videos, and the chance to purchase exclusive tickets for concerts when downloading the album. Though there is little doubt about Apple’s dominance in the download market, it seems that a little competition could end being a good thing for consumers. [Hypebot]
