Well, pretty darn close. Anvil, a seminal Canadian speed metal band with a three-decade career of ups and mostly downs, are featured in the hit film festival documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Yes, this is a real rockumentary, and the Tap starred in a mock rockumentary. Still, the similarities between the two bands' careers are striking.
"Summarized by some as a real-life 'This Is Spinal Tap,' “Anvil!” tracks [lead singer-guitarist Steve] Kudlow, the drummer Robb Reiner [not to be confused with "Tap" director Rob Reiner] and their long slog through a morass of record company rip-offs, incompetent management, under-publicized tours, changing tastes, a reunion with the former producer and the creation of a new album," the New York Times reports.
"Anvil!" was the big buzz at Sundance last January and got the same treatment in Toronto. It's expected to be a hit at the Los Angeles Film Festival next month. Anvil, the band, and "Anvil!" the documentary will be in Brooklyn May 31 for the Sundance Institute at BAM series. No idea if they'll have armadillos in their pants.
