Here's definitive proof Animal Collective are totes famous now: The Internet has been discussing the picture to your left, which has Avey Tare, Panda Bear, Deakin, and some other dude, partying it up from years ago. They look like dorks! Can you fucking believe it?
Typically, these kind of stories are limited to how geeky Lil Jon was in high school (answer: the geekiest), or how Jenna Jameson didn't look like a porn star in high school. So this is a big step up for Animal Collective fame-wise. As usual, Hipster Runoff scores the best comment:

Gee what a surprise. Funny -- the only lasting relevance this boring-ass band will have is if some future smart-ass (think girl talk, mochipet, etc., etc., etc.) samples their crap in 10 years.
Paul F Tompkins has a great routine about how when beautiful actresses say in interviews that they were tomboys growing up, but you never hear Brad Pitt admit he was a sissy.
That's less true for indie rock now. Do they even sell men's t-shirts in Williamsburg with sizes bigger than small these days? Hawaiian shirts don't count.
