Andrew Bird gets down with Yo Yo Ma (Video)

It’s a match made in orchestral instrument heaven—Andrew Bird did a bit for MTV with cellist Yo Yo Ma. At the beginning of the clip, Yo Yo gives Bird directions about when to come in, and boom, they’re off to the races, doing some piece that I assume is original, but I have minimal orchestral knowledge. As a bonus, Bird starts whistling near the end, adding the piece another layer. [via Stereogum

Awseome! Love that Bird threw the whistle in.

Is that as impressive as I think it is?

This makes me wish Bird would get back to his more intense violin playing. It seems in the last two albums that he's used the violin more as an understated means to accompany his singing, guitar, and whistling, when he has all these violin chops just waiting to explode like in some of his older Bowl Of Fire stuff.

Hehe...this is most definitely NOT original. It's an old Latin round dating from the 16th century called "Dona Nobis Pacem" (grant us peace). The words are taken from the Catholic mass. I bet Bird knows the melody plenty well - virtually every single elementary school choir sings it. Still, it's a lovely improvisation on Bird's part, equal parts baroque counterpoint and downhome twang.
