And So It Begins: Rick James’ Estate Bringing Class Action Lawsuit Against UMG For iTunes Sales

Yesterday, we brought you the news that labels could potentially owe artists billions of dollars over the definition of iTunes sales (labels classified them as a sale, but the court system has ruled they are licenses–which the artis is entitled to half of). Today comes news that the estate of Rick “Cocaine Is A Hell Of a Drug” James is suing Universal Music Group in a class action motion for back royalties due to iTunes sales, and his hoping to get other big acts on the label to join in. James’ estate’s suit has to act fast–and add other heritage acts to the class action suit–because sometimes there are windows on how long acts have to collect royalties. If heritage acts want the same kind of paper Eminem got from his case, they gotta move fast. I imagine they’re responsible for just as many iTunes sales as the younger acts on UMG’s roster.
