The least surprising news of the 2009 festival season is that Amy Winehouse has been refused a visa and won’t perform at Coachella in April. Winehouse, whose music career often feels like a dim and distant memory, was charged with attacking a fan last week, quashing any hopes of her appearance at the festival. Winehouse is accused of attacking dancer Sherene Flash on September 26, 2008, and will appear in court on March 17 to face the charge. She has also publicly admitted that she is struggling to produce songs for a follow-up to her hugely successful Back to Black album, saying: “I'm not feeling creative. I start things but I don't finish them. I know when stuff is rubbish."
The singer has had visa problems before, notably when she tried to attend the Grammy Awards in 2008. There’s now a sizable hole in the Coachella lineup, although it’s hard to imagine ticket holders being incensed at Winehouse’s exclusion. Did anyone really expect her to make it to Indio?
